Who Are We?
We are the Charter members, members and sponsors of the Watauga County Heritage Museum, Inc. (WCHM), today a dream but tomorrow a reality.
"Preserving yesterday to inform tomorrow."
"We" are all of us with roots in Watauga County.
Our Vision of Preservation... YES, We Can!
“Watauga County has an incredible history that includes Native American villages and the early treks of Daniel Boone, Civil War skirmishes, exploration by naturalists and geologists, the creation of a university, early North Carolina tourist destinations, and famous railroad lines. The Watauga County Historical Museum will help preserve that history for generations to come.”
Michael Hardy
“It is vital that we have a local heritage museum to inspire a deeper understanding of our past, fostering a profound appreciation for the present and illuminating the path to a brighter future.”
Diane Cornett Deal
“Like many residents of this county, I am proud of my family history and their contributions to this amazing mountain community. I wish to honor my ancestors’ sacrifices by preserving their history. I support a Watauga County Heritage Museum to showcase the numerous artifacts and amazing stories of our local families.”
Lee Stroupe
“Hearing the stories about the old days and how people lived and thrived has meant a lot to me. I know this heritage will enrich the lives of the generations to come, and we just can’t let it be forgotten.”
Judy Prussner Moretz
“In addition to preserving the inspirational story of our past, a museum will serve as a path for the future. It will serve as a unifying entity for citizens in all our communities, as an educational center, and as an economic driver.”
Mary Etta Moretz
“Knowledge of our history helps us develop resilience as it gives us perspective about what it took to get where we are today. We have a road map showing us the continuity from the past to the present that will guide our future and build our legacy.”
Dana Bango
“As the son, grandson, great grandson of proud, independent mountain people, I believe it is vitally important that we celebrate our heritage and preserve it for future generations.”
Sam Adams
“A museum dedicated to Watauga County’s heritage would strengthen local identity by celebrating the unique traditions of mountain music, crafts, and storytelling. It would also provide a space for community events, lectures, and exhibitions that connect residents with their shared history.
“Appalachian culture is often misunderstood or overlooked in broader historical narratives. A museum would highlight the contributions of local families, artisans, and historical figures, ensuring that Watauga County’s story is told accurately and with pride.”
L.D. Hagaman
“Watauga County has such a rich and wide range of historical events and culture that it needs to be recognized and shared. The potential loss and denial of history requires an outlet that will accurately convey the events of the past including the everyday life of our ancestors, the struggles they faced, and the ingenuity to overcome them. Our local history needs to be saved, displayed, and shared in order to educate our children and many visitors to our area.”
Floyd Hicks
Our Mission
The mission is to collect, preserve and display artifacts, documents and research that interpret the history of Watauga County and that is inclusive of all time periods, groups and institutions.
Our Vision
Our vision is to have a safe, secure building of adequate size to display and store artifacts, documents, papers and research, donated, purchased or loaned; to have adequate property adjacent to the building for a living museum consisting of historic cabins or replicas and structures for hands-on learning activities; and to have a small amphitheater for the production of historic plays and other cultural activities.
Our Values
The Corporation values the dignity and worth of all humans, acknowledging human imperfections and armed with the knowledge that everyone is a product of that person’s time and place. The museum’s collections and displays will use nonjudgmental candor as the guide.
